Happy Halloween from AnchorWell!

Happy Halloween! Life is meant to be enjoyed and holidays are meant to be celebrated - and YES that includes Halloween AND that includes Halloween even when you have Diabetes.

To help you celebrate Halloween - here are some tips and tricks to help manage your diabetes on this sugary day.

1. MODERATION! This tip is not just for people with Diabetes, this is for EVERYONE... one thing we will say all the time at AnchorWell is that you cannot eat whatever you want, whenever you want to eat it, as much as you want to eat it - and this includes Halloween. If you love Halloween and you love candy - let yourself enjoy a couple pieces, just don't plan on eating the whole bag. Again - no one, diabetes or not - should be planning on eating a pumpkin's worth of candy... so use moderation today.

2. WATER! When you eat a piece of candy - drink some water. Water in fact is so helpful in managing blood sugars - let's make sure you stay hydrated ALL day long!

3. WALKING! If you indulge and eat some yummy treats - go for a 15 minute walk after eating. This not only helps digestion -but absolutely helps lower your blood sugar!

4. BALANCE! One thing you will always hear Kelly our RD say, is never eat a carb alone. Aim for balance and food pairing - so have the piece of candy after a turkey sandwich, or eat some veggies and hummus first - try to add a healthy fat, fiber or protein to that candy - and avoid eating a carb alone!

5. MEDICATIONS! Make sure as always - you take your medications as prescribed. If you need insulin, cover those candy carbs as appropriate with a bolus. In our insulin class we talk about stacking insulin and how to help avoid lows with grazing - so if you want more help with how to bolus - check that out!

So.. there are our tips and tricks for eating on Halloween - that wasn't too scary right!?!?!?
